AI tag cleaner for images

AI generators and AI-assisted editors tag the files they touch: a “generated by AI” source type, a signed C2PA record, the app name, sometimes the whole prompt. Drop an image below to see every AI tag it carries, then clean them out without re-encoding a single pixel.

What is metadata?

Metadata is “data about data”: notes stored inside an image file that never show up in the picture itself. Cameras, phones, photo editors and AI image generators all add to it automatically, usually without telling you.

For photos, metadata falls into five broad groups. Each one answers a different question about the image — and about the person who took or made it.

Descriptive

Title, caption, keywords, names of people in the shot.

IPTC Caption, XMP dc:title

Technical

Camera make and model, lens, aperture, shutter, ISO, serial number.

EXIF Make, Model, BodySerialNumber

Location & time

GPS coordinates, altitude, capture date and time zone.

EXIF GPSLatitude, DateTimeOriginal

Rights & admin

Author, owner, copyright, last editing software.

EXIF Artist, Copyright, Software

Provenance & AI

Content Credentials, “made with AI” labels, prompts and workflows.

C2PA manifest, IPTC DigitalSourceType

You will see many names for the same job — “metadata remover”, “EXIF remover”, “metadata scrubber”, “strip photo info” — they all mean taking the hidden notes out of a file without changing the picture. Likewise a “metadata viewer”, “reader” or “checker” shows what is inside the file. AI Label Remover does both.

Why view and remove metadata before sharing a photo?

Any single metadata field is usually harmless, but together they say a lot about you. A photo taken at home and posted to a marketplace can carry GPS coordinates accurate to a few meters; images sent by email or cloud link keep everything the camera wrote. See how GPS in photos can reveal your home address.

For images made or edited with AI, metadata also decides whether a platform shows a “Made with AI” label, and can expose the full prompt you wrote.

  • Revealing where you live, work or travel through GPS coordinates.
  • Linking many photos to one person through a camera serial number or owner name.
  • Exposing prompts, seeds, models and workflows you meant to keep private.
  • Getting an AI label from a platform because of attached C2PA or IPTC data.

Common photo metadata standards

One image file can hold several metadata “compartments” at once, each following a different standard. AI Label Remover reads and removes all of the ones below.

EXIF
Written by cameras and phones: exposure settings, device, timestamps, GPS, thumbnails. Learn about EXIF.
XMP
Adobe’s XML format for edit history, ratings, keywords and many AI-related properties.
IPTC
The newsroom standard: captions, creator, copyright and the DigitalSourceType tag that declares AI images.
C2PA
Cryptographically signed Content Credentials recording how a file was made and edited. What is C2PA.
PNG text
tEXt, iTXt and zTXt chunks where Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI store prompts and workflows.

What gets washed out of each file type

Each format stores metadata its own way. AI Label Remover reads that structure directly instead of re-rendering the picture.

From tagged to clean in four moves

There is nothing to install and no account to create. The page itself does the work.

  1. Drop the files in

Add as many as 50 JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC or AVIF images. The browser opens them locally; no copy goes anywhere.

  2. Read the report

Each file is walked block by block — EXIF, XMP, IPTC, C2PA, text chunks — and you see what it says about place, people, time and AI.

  3. Press “Wash all images”

The metadata blocks are cut out of the byte stream. Image data is left alone, and the result is read again to prove the fields are gone.

  4. Save the clean copies

Save files one at a time, or grab every washed image in one ZIP archive.

Your photos stay safe

With any tool that handles personal files, the first question is “where do my photos go?”. AI Label Remover’s answer: nowhere.

  • 100% on your device

Reading and cleaning run in a Web Worker inside your browser tab. No server ever receives your files.

  • Nothing stored, no AI training

Because photos are never sent anywhere, there is no copy to store, leak or use to train a model.

  • Works offline

Load the page, turn off Wi-Fi and wash a file — it still works. The Network tab in DevTools shows no image data leaving.

  • No account, no tracking

No sign-up, no analytics, ads or third-party pixels. The site only remembers the language and theme you pick.

AI Label Remover vs. other ways to remove metadata

There are three common ways to strip metadata from a photo: an online remover that uploads your file, a screenshot or re-export, or a tool that edits the file itself. Here is an honest comparison on the seven points that matter most.

ChatGPT, Gemini and Nano Banana Images: What Metadata They Carry

Images made with ChatGPT or Google Gemini (including Nano Banana) leave the generator with provenance attached: C2PA Content Credentials stored beside the picture, and in Google’s case an invisible SynthID watermark woven into the pixels.

Questions people ask before trusting a cleaner

Do my images get sent anywhere?

No. The page reads and rewrites files inside your browser using Web Workers. Once it has loaded you can switch off Wi-Fi and it keeps working.

Will the picture look any worse afterwards?

No. AI Label Remover only cuts metadata blocks out of the file. The compressed image data is copied byte for byte, so resolution, detail and color are identical.

Which file types can I use?

JPEG/JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, HEIC/HEIF (the iPhone default) and AVIF. Each file can be up to 25 MB and 40 megapixels, and you can load 50 at a time.

What does “Worth a second look” mean?

The file carries C2PA Content Credentials that do not say AI was used. Some platforms still read that record when deciding on labels, so it is worth washing if you do not want it attached.

Can AI Label Remover remove SynthID or other invisible watermarks?

No. Those watermarks are woven into the pixels, not stored as metadata, and AI Label Remover deliberately never changes pixels.

Will Instagram or Facebook still label the image?

Labels that come from C2PA or IPTC metadata lose their source once it is washed out. Platforms can still rely on other signals or ask you to disclose AI content yourself.

Exactly what is removed, and what stays?

Removed: GPS, dates and camera settings, author and copyright, captions, software and edit history, thumbnails, AI source labels (IPTC DigitalSourceType, XMP), prompts and workflows, and C2PA manifests. Kept: pixel size, rotation, ICC color profile and animation frames.

Is there a catch to it being free?

No catch. Your device does the processing, so there is no per-image server bill to pass on, no account and no watermark.

What is the difference between EXIF and metadata?

EXIF is one kind of metadata — the kind cameras and phones write. “Metadata” is the wider term and also covers XMP, IPTC, C2PA and PNG text chunks. See what EXIF data is.

Can metadata show where a photo was taken?

Yes, if the image has GPS tags. Phones usually record latitude, longitude and altitude when location is enabled for the camera. The EXIF remover strips these tags without touching image quality.

How do I remove AI metadata from an image?

Drop the image into the box at the top of this page and press “Wash all images”, or use the dedicated AI metadata remover to preview the C2PA, IPTC and prompt data first.

Is it safe to upload my photos here?

Your photos are not uploaded at all. AI Label Remover opens files in your browser, processes them in the tab’s memory and saves the clean copy straight to your device. Once the page has loaded you can go offline and it keeps working.

Important disclaimer

Read this before relying on AI Label Remover: what the tool is for, and where its limits are.

What this tool does

  • Reads and removes metadata stored in image files: EXIF, GPS, XMP, IPTC, C2PA Content Credentials and PNG text such as AI prompts.
  • Works entirely in your browser. Files are never uploaded, stored or logged.
  • Copies the image data unchanged, keeping pixel size, rotation, color profile and animation.
  • Reads every washed file again and shows which fields remain.

What this tool cannot do

  • Remove invisible watermarks in the pixels, such as Google SynthID, or visible marks and logos.
  • Guarantee that a platform will not apply an AI label — platforms also use classifiers, watermark detection and creator disclosure.
  • Prove that an image is real or AI-generated. Missing metadata is not evidence either way.
  • Restore removed metadata or validate C2PA signatures. Keep your original files.

Your responsibility

  1. Use AI Label Remover to protect privacy and correct wrong labels, not to deceive people or pass AI-generated images off as real.
  2. Follow the disclosure rules of the platforms you post on and the laws that apply to you.
  3. Only wash files you own or are allowed to modify, and respect copyright and attribution.

No warranty

  1. AI Label Remover is free and provided “as is”, without warranty of any kind. Check the result before sharing sensitive files.
  2. Articles on this site are general information, not legal advice, and platform policies change often.
  3. AI Label Remover is independent and not affiliated with Meta, Google, OpenAI, Adobe, Midjourney or the C2PA.
